Day 5: 1/6 of the way there!

I am such a math geek! Anytime I do anything like this 30 days of eating right, I always think of how far I`ve come in fractions. Today I am 1/6 of the way there, tomorrow I`ll be 1/5 of the way there, and then next week when I hit Day 10 I`ll be 1/3 of the way there! Fractions are cool. My high school math teacher, Doc Eads, would be so proud. What a great man he was!

OK, so here`s my recap of day 5. Overall I am feeling ok. According to the Whole30 Timeline on their website, which you can see here, on days 4 & 5 people tend to want to "Kill all the things!" I honestly didn`t feel this for the last 2 days, except for last night when I had feelings of wanting to kill my husband, but that was totally unrelated to my current eating situation and more because of him! I would have felt the same way in that exact moment even if I had just eaten pizza for dinner and was preparing myself a hot fudge sundae! Luckily I was able to control myself and vented to a friend instead and today I will calmly explain to him why what he said was wrong.

Here are my meals from Day 5:

Breakfast: I had made some bacon in the middle of the night when Noa wouldn`t sleep, so I had that with some crispy sweet potatoes with 2 eggs on top and a salad on the side.

In order to avoid the no nap, sleeping at 6pm incident 2 days in a row I decided we should get outside in the morning so she`d take a nap. Being at the park with her reminded me of probably the number 1 reason I want to be healthier... for her! I was tired after about 15 minutes of climbing up the stairs and sliding down the slide repeatedly. I don`t want to feel that way. I want to be able to keep up with her when she wants to play.

Lunch was some chicken salad I whipped up from an extra chicken breast I roasted the night before and some homemade mayo, cilantro, and jalapenos. I also had a chicken fajita egg cup for fear I wouldn`t have enough protein. I also had tomatoes, avocado slices, and a red bell pepper which I scooped the chicken salad onto and ate. The crunchiness made it feel kind of like chips and dip! I also had some Deleware grapes, possibly my favorite type of grape.
I also tried a sparkling coconut water I found at a store in the mall near our place. It`s around $2 a bottle so I was actually kind of relieved that I didn`t really like it. I had to try it once though. I`ll stick with my soda water with lemon or just water!

After lunch I convinced Noa to lay down with me and although she resisted we both fell asleep just before 2pm. I`d set an alarm for 3pm, but ignored it and slept until almost 4pm. Big mistake! I know I can`t sleep that long in the afternoon because I always, without fail, wake up feeling groggy and worse than I did before I went to sleep. Yesterday on top of the grogginess I also had a headache. I realized then that I hadn`t had any caffeine all day and thought that could be the culprit. So I headed to the kitchen to make myself a little snack.

Golden berries, walnuts and iced coffee which I just mixed into the jar holding the remainder of my coconut milk (gotta save on dishes when I can!).
I kind of felt like I wasn`t really hungry when I ate this, like it`s just a habit to have something around that time of day. If I feel the same way today I will just have a coffee. Of course I am actually having a coffee now as I type this, so maybe I should try some tea instead. I bought some cold brew green tea yesterday and according to the woman who sold it to me, when you cold brew it the amount of caffeine is reduced. Does anyone know if that`s true?!

Dinner: Salmon grilled in the fish grill that`s built in to my stove, 3 kinds of mushrooms cooked in olive oil and garlic, sauteed broccoli and cherry tomatoes, avocado. Easy, simple, delicious!

While we were eating dinner the doorbell rang and it was someone from Sagawa Kyubin (kind of like UPS back home) so I knew it was my order from iHerb! Yes!!!

I ordered some chipotle lime mayo (can`t wait to use it), some arrowroot flour, coconut flour, Mrs. Dash seasoning for chicken, and pizza seasoning. I can get arrowroot flour in the supermarket here, but it`s a much smaller package and about the same price or more expensive even. I can`t wait to add some of that pizza seasoning to some veggie pizza egg cups or to some ground beef and marinara and put it on a sweet potato maybe. The possibilities are endless!

About 10 minutes after we finished dinner the doorbell rang again and this time it was the post office. I just had a friend tell me yesterday morning that she had sent us something, but I thought surely it couldn`t be that package already, but I had no clue who it could be from. When I opened the door and saw a package with familiar handwriting and in the return address corner was my mom`s name, I was so excited!! Most of it was stuff I had ordered and sent to her house, but there was one really special thing inside...

My very own Special Plate!!

Growing up we had this same exact red plate that reads along the top and bottom border "You are special today" and when anyone in the family did something deemed as "special," that person got to eat on the special plate. If I`m not mistaken, a few years ago I discovered that both of my sisters had one, but I didn`t and I believe I expressed my dissatisfaction with that fact. Well now, thanks to my mom, I have one too and the Okabe family can now start the tradition of using the special plate when one of us does something good. I am thinking since Father`s Day is coming up Koichi may be the first to get to use it because even though he drives me crazy and I occasionally feel really irritated with him, I do want him to know we appreciate him.

This week`s goals

Goal #1 - run It`s Monday morning here and I`ve got my first run of the week done! My goal is to get out and run everyday this week M-F and maybe on Saturday too. From Saturday I`m going on a 2 night camping trip with 14 students from the English conversation school where I work. I`m hoping it will be fun, but who knows... This morning I set my alarm for 6:00 to get out and run before Koichi woke up, but that didn`t happen. I ended up getting out of bed around 7:40. I made breakfast so Koichi could eat and then I packed his lunch while snacking on the watermelon that wouldn`t fit in his lunch box. I considered not running since it was already after 8:00. but I decided to just get out there and do it and now I`m glad I did! Goal #2 - eat healthy meals & track food About to make some breakfast now. I`m thinking I`ll make a green smoothie and have 1/4 of an avocado and some sliced tomatoes on the side, may even throw in an egg. Lunch will most likely be chicken taqu...

TGIF

I love Fridays! Thursdays are pretty long for me and I have a few tough classes and then on Friday I have a really easy day with good kids and almost the entire day free. Plus, the weekend is near! Yesterday I was lucky to finish at 4:30 in the afternoon. I had to do some shopping for our upcoming camping trip so I texted my friend Kazuko to see if I could drop by her place. She said yes and I picked up some take out curry and headed over. We had dinner and talked and I played with her kids who are so adorable. It was a nice break from the kids I get to see everyday! I needed to get away from my everyday routine so it was a good visit. Here`s what I`ve got going on today: 1) fold and put away laundry (I`m bad about folding and leaving!) 2) clean kitchen and dining room table 3) Swiffer floors because they`re gritty with volcanic ash 4) exercise at 9:00 (that will make 3 days in a row) 5) Face Time with my sister!! I love planning things to do on the weekends. So far this wee...

Headache -> Cancelled plans

I was supposed to have friends over for a 鍋 (hot-pot) party tonight. I`d invited Kazuko`s family and Miki`s family and we were all looking forward to a fun evening eating, drinking, talking and laughing. Unfortunately I have had a headache since yesterday evening so my plans were cancelled. I thought it would be better when I woke up this morning, but it wasn`t. I went to work at 9:00 for a lesson and thought some coffee would help, but it didn`t. After work I decided to suck it up and go to the gym to work out thinking the exercise would clear my head and take the pain away, but it didn`t. After I came home I discussed with Koichi that I would take some medicine and if my head was still hurting around 3:00pm that I would contact both friends and cancel the evening. Around that time I got a message from Kazuko that her son had a runny nose and that he and her husband would stay home because she didn`t want his germs to spread to Miki`s 8 month old baby. So I made the decision then to g...
